Tamara Carey is a Melbourne based abstract artist. She discovered a love of art and painting during high school and went on to complete an Associate Diploma of Arts: Visual Arts, majoring in painting. Although originally an oil painter, Tamara describes herself as “experimental and constantly learning” and has progressed to working with a variety of resins, varnishes and other mixed media. Her work with such media has taken many years to master and her processes, techniques and exploration of new materials continues to develop and evolve.
Perception of colour, space and form is a significant theme featured in Tamara’s work. Though the artist takes inspiration from her life and environment, she places great emphasis on the concept of inviting the viewer to “see what they see”, not what they are “told” to see. The artist further explores this concept through enabling flexibility in the orientation that her paintings can be displayed. In more recent exhibitions, paintings have been periodically rotated to emphasize different facets of the work and promote an unlimited scope of perception.
Tamara uses strong, vibrant colour, creating a sense of depth and dimension in her work which she achieves through the use of unique materials and complex layering techniques. The overall effect is fluid and dramatic, evoking a sense of reflection and emotion.
The artist is strongly influenced by colour, fluidity, movement and the concept of capturing a single moment in time.
