Monika Andrew Poray
Monika is a very passionate artist and has been practicing as a professional artist since first studying Fine Arts at the VCA in 2004. She enjoys drawing from life and from the imagination. In 3rd year Bachelor, Monika became intrigued in working with nature and combining drawing with installation art. In the 2007 end of year exhibition, her art piece was a hanging plant installation that formed as one huge spiral, engaging and majestic.
When Monika studied Masters Coursework at RMIT in 2009/10, she found a new fascination and direction in nature: the geometric complexities found within plants. Monika called this new interest and art concept 'Geodesia.' During her masters project along the Merri Creek, it was impossible for her to miss this aesthetic feature in nature. She discovered: shapes and ratios on leaves and petals, spiral growth patterns along the stem of a tree, and complex mathematical proportions throughout.
During her Masters study, Monika, simultaneously, gained an interest in coiled weaving with local indigenous grass. This came about as a result to work with natural and local materials from the site, that didn't effect the environment. Traditionally weaved into baskets, she enjoyed creating different shapes and patterns that reflected on any geometric findings. It seemed an appropriate medium to work in as the spiralling technique relates to geometric patterns. The process of weaving an artwork from the centre, where its limitless dimensions can end anytime, is different to that from drawing on paper or painting on canvas.
As a result for her passion and sharing her art concept Monika facilitated many art workshops on these art forms, especially weaving, to the community. She studied a PostGraduate in Education at Monash to broaden her facilitation and teaching skills.
Today, Monika's newest adventure is establishing and running her business 'MAPart' that offers art workshops, tutoring and folio development to art students and those interested in the arts. Monika continues to work on 'Geodesia'; drawing new shapes and creating geometric sculptural grass weaves. She is constantly researching on different patterns in nature, exploring and understanding their geometries, and representing them visually.
